On March 27, 2026, a delegation of 23 rectors and faculty members from 12 Buddhist institutes in Myanmar, led by Venerable Miaoyu of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), visited the Department of Buddhist Studies at Fo Guang University for an academic exchange. The distinguished delegation included Venerable Kosalla, a senior monk with 65 years of monastic experience, adding significant depth and international importance to the visit.
The delegation arrived at Yunshui Building in the early afternoon and was warmly received by Department Chair Professor Kan Zhengzong, reflecting the department’s strong commitment to international engagement. The visit began with a presentation by Professor Cheng Wei-yi, who introduced the college’s educational philosophy, curriculum design, and global development. Interpretation was provided by Venerable Daoyuan, a Myanmar student in the undergraduate program.
Following this, Venerable Candimarsiri, a Myanmar student enrolled in the English-taught master’s program, shared his academic experiences at the department and offered insights into the interaction between Buddhist communities in Taiwan and Myanmar. Venerable Daoyuan also spoke about her own educational journey, highlighting her adaptation to a cross-cultural environment and her deepening engagement with Buddhist studies.
The exchange was lively and inspiring. Members of the Myanmar delegation expressed great interest in Professor Kan’s long-term research on temple gazetteers and Buddhist history. Some senior monks emphasized that “the Dharma is one,” underscoring the importance of continued dialogue and mutual understanding between Chinese (Mahayana) and Theravāda traditions. This perspective highlighted the broader significance of the visit in fostering inter-traditional Buddhist exchange.
The three-hour visit concluded successfully, after which the delegation toured the Fo Guang University campus, accompanied by Venerable Candimarsiri, gaining further insight into the university’s excellent academic and living environment.
The Department of Buddhist Studies at Fo Guang University has long been dedicated to internationalized education and currently has the highest proportion of international students on campus. Through English-medium instruction, global exchange opportunities, and the integration of Buddhist theory and practice, the department cultivates talents with both global vision and local commitment. This visit not only deepened educational collaboration between Taiwan and Myanmar but also demonstrated the department’s vital role as an international platform for Buddhist education.
