Professor Ann Heirman of Ghent University Visits College of Buddhist Studies for Luncheon Dialogue, Deepening Academic Exchange

On March 31, 2026, Professor Ann Heirman, a renowned international scholar from Ghent University in Belgium, joined students of the College of Buddhist Studies at Fo Guang University for a luncheon discussion held in Room 117 of Yunshui Building. The session continued the academic dialogue initiated in her lecture the previous day.

The discussion took place during lunchtime, creating a relaxed yet intellectually engaging atmosphere. Professor Heirman responded to questions arising from her lecture and engaged in in-depth exchanges with students, while also sharing insights from her recent research. Topics included the historical development of the śikṣamāṇā (probationary nun) system, gender issues in Buddhist monastic regulations, and contemporary ethical concerns regarding Buddhism and animal rights. The discussion was both rich and diverse, combining historical depth with modern relevance.

Approximately ten students participated actively, demonstrating strong academic training and critical thinking skills. The discussion was lively, with frequent interactions between the professor and students, and continued until around 1:30 p.m.
